Welcome to TC203
The Technical Committee TC203 (ex TC-4) on Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Associated Problems, of International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE), started up in 1985, reflecting the increasing need and interest of earthquake engineering among the geotechnical engineering community.
Professor Kenzi Ishihara was the first chairman, followed by Professor Pedro Seco e Pinto, Professor Liam Finn, Professor Takaji Kokusho and Professor Atilla Ansal.
For more than 30 years TC203 has provided the main forum for ISSMGE members in the area of earthquake geotechnical engineering and made significant contributions in responding to the hazards and challenges posed in science, research and earthquake engineering practice.
Following the recent restructuring of ISSMGE and its committees TC203 is currently composed by 85 members, from academic, consulting and construction industry, representing 29 countries throughout the world, and it covers a wider spectrum of earthquake-associated geotechnical problems without neglecting more general problems and topics associated with earthquake engineering, engineering seismology, risk assessment and management.
The strong earthquakes that we experienced recently have accelerated our efforts to explore the reasons of the encountered damage as well as for the implementation of earthquake mitigation measures. Most of our efforts to understand the factors affecting damages and the effect of these factors on structure response are still going on and significant efforts are needed to better mitigate earthquake risk. It also our endeavour and challenge to prepare the future young researchers and engineers involved in this field.
The improvements that can be imagined to the functioning of our committee as part of ISSMGE and strongly related with other societies and associations in earthquake engineering and seismology can be achieved only with the precious work of all members and working groups.
We encourage all national associations and geotechnical engineers to participate in our TC works.
You are welcome to the website of TC203,
Prof. Ross Boulanger, Chair
Prof. Kyriazis Pitilakis, Vice-Chair
